Homeplace President speaks at Annual Picnic

Homeplace on Green River President Billy Joe Fudge address a group of approximately 50 in attendance at the Annual Board picnic for the Homeplace on Green River. Also addressing the group were Lori Sargent of Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY; Senator David Givens, Greensburg, KY; Treasurer Dr. Max Downey, Columbia, KY; historian/author Betty Jane Gorin, Campbellsville, KY; and Cub Scout leader David Leathers, Campbellsville, KY. The Homeplace on Green River, is a joint effort for the residents of Adair, Green, and Taylor Counties. County Judge Executives of the three counties are ex offiicio members of the groups board of directors, and two, CJE Ann Melton of Adair County and Eddie Rogers of Taylor County were in attendance. Homeplace on GR 2009 picnic: Dr. Max Downey, winged elm

Columbia, KY, optometrist Dr. Max Downey, treasurer and fundraiser for Homeplace on Green River, examines the tiny leaves of the great Winged Elm on the Homeplace Farm. The Winged Elm is the largest of its species in all the State of Kentucky. Dr. Downey's residence is 7 miles, four hours by river from the Homeplace, but less than three miles, four minutes by car.

Homeplace on GR 2009 Picnic: Back from hayride

Vermonter and Tebbs Bend Road farmer Ross Bowen pilots the Kubota tractor pulling a hayride back from a visit to record Winged Elm tree for a return to the farm's homebase, as Taylor County Judge Executive Eddie Rogers prepares to pull off the road to make way. The driver, known as Dr. Ross Bowen to everyone at Campbellsville University where he is a professor of history, owns a nearby farm and is playing a major role in the development and restoration of the farm.

Homeplace on GR 2009 Picnic: Dr. Lori Sargent, LWC

Dr. Lori Sargent, Assistant Dean of Students at Lindsey Wilson College, addressed the gathering of some 50 supporters of Homeplace on Green River, reviewing Lindsey Wilson College's involvement in the tri-county - Adair, Green, and Taylor - county enterprise. The college has used the farm for work projects, for open air recreation, and as an "outdoor classroom," Dr. Sargent said. Some 120 art displays are now on exhibit at the Lucretia C. Begley Art Gallery in the Slider Humanities Center at Lindsey Wilson, she said, and told the group that responsible exhibitors are welcome to borrow parts or all the exhibt to further public awareness of the Homeplace.

Homeplace on GR 2009 Picnic: Bank barn restoration project

The fabulous bank barn at the Homeplace on Green River is a major currently ongoing restoration project, under the personal purview of, and the magnificent obsession of Dr. Max Downey. Boards and timbers for the work is already laid by; some can be seen stacked in the barn at right. Funds are still being raised to pay for the skilled craftsman, the carpenters and stonemasons, and roofers, who will be needed to complete the project.
