Corporate Sponsor of the Month

Agape House Pregnancy Resource Center is a faith based non-profit 501c3 organization based in Columbia. We are an organization that provides a support system to parents through mentoring, material services, positive reinforcement for responsible actions, parenting (some court ordered) and prenatal classes. Our court ordered clients come from Adair, Russell and Warren counties. Our services are available without regard to sex, race, color, national origin or sexual preference. We have separate classes for men and women as well as classes which the parents come together to learn better parenting and life skills. We currently serve Adair and surrounding counties. We average 13 new clients per month, and our program takes approximately 4 to 5 months to complete depending on the amount of time the client spends with us each week.

Agape House has been in existence since April 11, 2008. We have served well over 100 families in that time. We are governed by a board of directors consisting of CJ Simpson, Joe Payne, Rev. LaVerne Reliford, Sharon Burton and Sharon Payne. Our director is Stephanie Caldwell. We are blessed to be able to support our community in this way.

Concerns on Downtown Parking

An ongoing concern in regards to downtown businesses was brought to the attention of the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce recently. We were asked, What could the Chamber do to help with the parking situation? After listening to the concerns of local downtown business owners regarding the parking situation, and being an organization that supports and patronizes these Columbia Businesses, we would like to help voice these concerns to the public.

As Board members of the Chamber, we would like to encourage all downtown business owners and their employees to refrain from parking on the square or side streets during regular business hours. Making parking available in front of or near to our downtown businesses is of utmost importance for the economic c=stability of each business. We encourage the citizens of Columbia and Adair County to shop locally downtown and utilize the many other services offered around the square. Please take into consideration the patrons of all business owners on and around the square and use one of the parking lots surrounding the backside of downtown. We believe that having available parking is essential to keep the citizens of Columbia and Adair County shopping downtown, and making Columbia...A Great Place to Call Home.

CREATIVITY

One of Ron Heath's Objectives As Chamber of Commerce President-Elect

By Dan Koger

After a career leading development programs for colleges and universities, Ron Heath is bringing his creativity and energy to the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce as the Chamber's President-Elect.

Heath, who takes office in January, 2010, recently retired after 35 years in fund raising and public relations at six different colleges and universities. The last three and a half years he served as Vice President for Advancement at Lindsey Wilson College. One of Heath's special interests is promoting partnerships in Columbia and Adair County to build on the community's strengths. The Wares Fair held at the start of each school year is a good example of that partnership concept in action. He was instrumental in starting the event four years ago.

Under the sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce and Lindsey Wilson College, the Wares Fair provides a valuable opportunity for local merchants and service providers to make hundreds of incoming students as well as faculty and staff aware of what they have to offer.

"This event creates a win-win situation for the students and the merchants. The students have a good time and have the chance to win some really nice prizes while the merchants have the opportunity to make the campus community aware of what they have to offer," Heath said.

This year he's encouraging business people at the Fair to be creative as possible in attracting students to their booths and tables. Heath added "As a Chamber of Commerce we can help by offering ideas and suggestions to businesses to help them promote themselves in the most effective way to their target audience".

As Chamber President next year, Heath plans to use this same creativity in developing and implementing programs to bring further support to the business community and to the people who live here.

Address Markers

Have you purchased your address marker for you home or business? If not, remember to go by the Adair County Sheriff's office and purchase your address marker! Emergency services will find you much easier when you need them. Wouldn't it be great to see every home and business in Columbia and Adair County have one of the reflective address markers?

Last Sunday afternoon while taking a drive on Highway 55 South, I made a left hand turn at Glens Fork and traveled on Hwy. 768 to Hwy. 92. I was delighted to see the number of homes/businesses that had their address marker displayed where they could easily be seen. I got so excited to see the markers! Hopefully everyone in Adair County will follow the example of this community.

By purchasing a sign, you could save your life or the life of someone you love. In addition, YOU will be helping the Chamber of Commerce with projects that make our community a better place to live such as Christmas In Columbia and other events. Profit on each sign is $1.00.

Don't forget to purchase your sign!!
Be Alert...Watch Out for Scams

The Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau would like to encourage you to use extra caution as scams are on the rise. The following 10 scams have been the hot topics for the month of July according to Reanna Smith - Hamblin from the Better Business Bureau Office (BBB) in Louisville, KY.

3hourprofits.com is an email work-at-home scam that has been using the BBB name to boost its reputation. The website claims employees can make over $10,000 a month. It also claimed that the "BBB Review" rated it the number one work from home opportunity. Sorry, but there is no such thing as the "BBB Review". This is a scam!

A letter using the Reader's Digest name claims consumers have won a prize of $4.6 million payable by a bank wire transfer. Attached with the letter is a verification sheet asking for personal information including driver's license, date of birth, Social Security number, credit card numbers and much more. If they receive your personal information they will be the big winners...not YOU!!

BBZ Resource Management has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. The company claims to help businesses increase sales and retain customers by offering an opportunity to advertise free gas and grocery gift cards. After making a qualified purchase, consumers receive a voucher that instructs them to register online to receive the free gift cards. Many consumers complain of non-receipt of gift cards and that the card isn't activated.

In response to the new Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) passed by President Obama, many new "Cash for Clunkers Scams" have begun springing up. These new laws save consumers thousands of dollars if they trade in old, gas guzzler cars for new, fuel efficient ones. Many websites offer to pre-register you, but they are really stealing your personal information. You don't have to sign up or be pre-approved; the care dealers handle all of the paperwork. The official website for the program is www.cars.gov.

Local customers are receiving letters in the mail from The Shoppers Sweepstakes. The company claims to be accredited by the Better Business Bureau and sponsored by groups like Microsoft and Wal-Mart. The letter states your name was randomly selected to win $250,000. A check for $4,795.00 is enclosed. You are told to wire part of the money back for "applicable taxes". Later you find out you really weren't a winner, and the check was fake.

Federal Trade Commission Checks are the real deal.Several consumers have called BBB to verify that the check they received for $17.68 in the mail is valid. Over $400,000 checks were mailed in June as a result of a federal lawsuit the FTC won in which the defendants, JK Publications, made unauthorized charges on consumer credit cards and debit card for internet services.

Neverpayitback.com charges $2.78 for a 7 day trial to their service...a database of grant resources. After the 7 day trail, $29.95 is charged for a monthly membership fee. Even though the website guarantees $2,500, you must apply for each grant separately and wait to see if you actually receive money from any of the grants. BBB warns that government grants are not hidden and you should not have to pay a membership fee to apply for them. For more information on government grants go to www.grants.gov.

Publishers Clearing House Scam - Local consumers are receiving calls from scam artists claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House. The caller tells the consumer they have won a large sum of money and a Mercedes Benz; then the caller asks for the consumer's bank account and credit card information. Never...Never...give your personal information to someone you don't know over the phone.

21st Century Legal Services has an F rating with the BBB. Complainants allege the company promises to help restructure their home loans, but asks for a fee up front. The company instructs consumers to stop paying their home loan. Complainants say the company fails to provide the services promised. One local woman says she gave the company $3,000 and didn't get anything in return.

Craig's List Scam - A local man, trying to rent his house out on Craig's List, received an email from Dr. Peter Cotton. The doctor, who claimed to be from England, said he wanted to rent the man's house. He sent the man a check to hold the property. The local man said the check didn't look real. He called the place where the doctor claimed to work, and no one had ever heard of him. This is a scam and you are warned to always do your homework before dealing with someone you don't know.

Adair County residents are encouraged to call the Chamber of Commerce office at 384-6020 to report any action that you suspect may be a scam or to get information on a business or company that you may be thinking of doing business with.

Star Attractions

Fifty stars have adorned Old Glory since Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union 50 years ago. Do you know what is the top tourist attraction in Kentucky and the number of visitors it draws annually? The answer...Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area...draws 1,259,777 people per year.

Did you know that the two most distinct attractions for Adair County, which tourists come to visit are: Green River Lake - Holmes Bend Marina Resort and Lindsey Wilson College - Begley Chapel.

In successful tourism, there are never only one or two attractions holding up the entire tourism industry. No one can do it alone. Communities can develop an entire marketing campaign for their greatest attraction, but without supporting businesses, the attraction will never reach its full potential. Primary attractions know the advantages of having their suppliers close by and a range of diverse activities. They even appreciate competitors, knowing that the presence of one supports the other.

Artisans from throughout the region and nation are moving to Columbia and Adair County. A brochure featuring the artisans in Adair County and the Heartland Waterways Corridor (Adair, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Monroe and Taylor counties) is available at the Chamber Building, 201 Burkesville Street in Columbia. These brochures are free of charge.

Did you know the Heartland Waterways Corridor has a driving tour featuring the outstanding attractions in the area? The driving tour includes a CD and a map. This is also available at the Chamber Building and is free of charge. If you want to take a drive some afternoon, stop by the office and let's chat. Sue Stivers and Kathy Johnson will show you how you can spend an afternoon entertaining you family or friends here in Adair County and the Corridor...and oh yes, don't forget to ask us about the Quilt designs on rural barns. All this adds to the beauty and a higher quality of life for local citizens, but is also a tourist attraction.
