Biggest factor in alchohol abuse not wet or dry Thinks edge on abuse may be in dry counties, but thinks the big factor is upbringing - family teaching - is more of a factor in alcohol abuse than whether county is wet or dry By Bobby D. Morrison International Management & Engineering Consultant I've been watching the debate on dry, moist or wet on Columbia Magazine for many months. As you know, I have worked and lived around the world and throughout the USA. I tried to think of the dry places I have worked or lived. About the only place is Adair County. I haven't observed abuse of being wet in the many places I have been. I think I have observed more abuse in dry locations. In countries like Honduras anyone of any age can buy as long as they have the money, no age limit. On Harvey's Ridge, some were forbidden by parents to drink I was thinking of when I was growing up on Harvey's Ridge, Chance, KY. Good friends of my brothers and I were forbidden to drink anything by their parents. Our parents told if we drank, experiment at home Our parents told us if we must experiment with drinking to bring it home and 'Hang it ON.' As a result none of us five boys every had a problem, were arrested or landed in jail. However, three of the other boys (all of the sons) wound up in trouble because of drinking. I think it is more of a family teaching of using it responsibly. In the past I have often said that people in the North of our country drink for social reason but for some reason in the South many people drink to "Get drunk and raise Hell. However, I think that attitude has changed in the last 20-30 years to a more social attitude. I have often heard that when a wet-dry issue/vote comes up the bootleggers and preachers team up to defeat it. I'm not sure if that is true but seems possible. Thanks.
