Memories of White Oak school, above Green River Editorial comment: The White Oak Community was just north of Plum Point Bridge, to the west of present day Knifley Road/KY 551; writer recalls happy time before massive Federal land grab took the area in the 1960s. Should we forget about it? No! It was wrong then and it would be wrong if they try it again. From a Chelf who still misses Old Knifley -Ed Waggener By Regina Key I remember the White Oak community. My grandmother was Dellie Feese Watson and she lived there until about 1962. Hack and Lucy Davis also lived in that community as well as Jim Durrett and family. I was probably 8 years old when my grandmother moved away as everyone else did because of Green River Lake and the dam. I remember White Oak School. The last day of school before Christmas, when I was probably four years old, I went to school with Joyce Davis. I can remember the old wood stove, the water bucket and dipper, and the outhouse. I also remember the walk to school that cold, frosty morning. When you cross Plum Point bridge, take the first left. The last time I was down there, the road was pretty rough. Anyway, when you come out at the lake, that is where my grandmother's farm would have been. There was a creek several feet in front of the house. The school was across the creek and on up the road a good way, or so it seemed to an 8 year old. The Davis family had a son who is still in Adair County and my Uncle Bob Watson has lived in Lebanon since leaving White Oak. Both these men could tell you a whole lot more than I. Some of the earliest and happiest times of my life was spent in that little community. I still miss the community and the people. This story was posted on 2009-07-20 16:34:53
