Adair County has another White Oak community, near Roy

Local history comment on: Preservation, Paul Corbin, and old. old Knifley school, White Oak

By E.H. Lepiarczyk II

The White Oak School was probably located near Green River in the White Oak community there.

Adair County has another White Oak community, near Roy.

My grandfather, Daniel Marion Grider (1888-1949), grew up in the White Oak community, near Roy.

A church, White Oak Baptist Church was the major landmark of this community. My great-grandfather, James Grider (1826-1909), was a trustee of the early White Oak Baptist Church and led many church singings there.

The church over time is now the White Oak Church, a non-denominational one. The nearest schools in this White Oak community were probably the Conover School and the Rainfall School.

My grandfather attended the Conover School at Roy. Over the passage of time, the area of Roy where the Conover School was located began to be known as the Freedom community.

Many people today do not know that this area was once known as the historic Roy community which had a general store and post office!

It is confusing that Adair County has two White Oak communities. So, I would bet that the White Oak School at White Oak, near Green River is the shcool where Mr. Paul Corbin was a teacher.

I would like to learn more information about the White Oak community near Green River. Does this community still exist? The White Oak community, near Roy, Freedom, and Ozark still exists. I know that a White Oak voting precinct is also near the Ozark voting precinct.
