On Monday, June 29, a group of travelers from the local area as well as surrounding counties and states left Columbia, KY, for a trip to the Southern part of the United States. The group was delighted to find that they were going to be riding on a brand-new, never-been-used coach with lots of new technology!

The group traveled through nine states including Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Day One: Columbia to Columbia

The first day, the travelers drove to Columbia, South Carolina to spend the night. On the second day, the group ventured to the famous Paula Deen's restaurant in Savannah, Georgia to eat lunch. After filling up on home-cooked food, they moved on to Jacksonville, Florida for the night.

Day Two: Daytona Beach and IMAX

The next day, the group toured the Daytona Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. They boarded a bus and drove on the actual speedway track although they didn't travel quite as fast as the race cars do! Everyone enjoyed an IMAX presentation after the tour. After leaving the speedway, group members moved on to Daytona Beach to have fun in the Atlantic Ocean and on the beach and relax in their ocean-front rooms.

Day Three: Orlando and Universal Studios

On Thursday, the group moved on to Orlando, Florida and did some shopping at an outlet mall. Afterwards, they visited Universal Studios where they saw a performance of the popular Blue Man Group.

Day Four: Florida sightseeing

Friday was a busy day for sightseeing. The travelers moved on through Florida and stopped at a local fruit stand for some fresh Florida fruit. They traveled on to Ocean Springs, Mississippi and enjoyed the scenery along the way.

Day Five: New Orleans day. Katrina

Saturday, July 4, was New Orleans day. The group saw the devastation from Hurricane Katrina as they drove into the city. Lunch was a delicious buffet aboard the steamboat, Natchez. After leaving New Orleans, the group moved on to Meridian, Mississippi to spend the night.

Day Six: Tupelo, MS, and back to Columbia with great memories

On Sunday, the group reboarded the coach and stopped at Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Group members watched a presentation in the church Elvis attended and then toured his 2-room shotgun house. From there, the group drove on to Columbia with great memories of their Southern Sojourn.

The group members were Hannah Absher, Teresa Absher, Tyler Absher, Dustin Arnold, Kathy Arnold, Sallie Cook, Paul Cottrell, J. B. Crawley, Beverly Gabehart, Jeannie Goode, Georgia Hatfield, Dot Jones, Catherine Kearney, Jesse Kendall, Lois Kendall, Laverne Kennon, Rhonda Nichols, Kim Perkins, Ludora Perkins (group leader), and Pauline Pike.
