Thanks to a generous additional donation from Columbia optometrist Dr. Max Downey, the Adair County Band's Money in the Bank thermometer for the 2009 Macy's Day Parade fund drive, has now reached $112,185.

That leaves $27,815 to go to reach the bands $140,000 goal. With 140 days left before departure, the band will need to deposit an average of $198,68 per day to meet the goal.

Yet to be added or reported are profits from the Band Boosters' Food Concessions at the Adair County Fair. That information won't be released until after the fair is over, but the concensus is that the Boosters are providing world class Fair Food, the best in the history of the celebration.

2009 Adair County Fair: Myers International lights midway

2009-07-09 - Adair Co. Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Doyle Lloyd.
Myers International Amusements is almost as much a part of the tradition of the Adair County Fair as VFW Post 6097 and the Adair County Jaycees. They've been coming here since the late '50s, early 60's, with the biggest change coming in the fair layout. Now the carnival is in the grove. A half century ago, the midway was on the strip along Fairground Street. Doyle Lloyd captured this wonderful scene, with the lights of the giant swing and the Ferris Wheel lighting the sky. The fair continues through Saturday, July 11, 2009. Printable Schedule, 2009 Adair Co. Fair

Epicurean Kentuckian: 2009 Adair Co. Fair Food. The Grill

2009-07-09 - Adair Co. Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Doyle Lloyd.
FAIR FOOD IS BETTER THIS YEAR than ever. Adair County Band Boosters Master Pit Chefs are grilling fat juicy hamburgers, plump hotdogs, and country ham for some of the same great taste they provide on road trips when the "Gods of Bands" rolls out of Columbia for out of town competitions. Money raised from Fair Food sales should make a dramatic dent in the $27,815 still needed for the band's 2009 appearance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. All American Grillmasters alternating in starring roles are Chris Knifley, Randy Huckaby, Clifford Jasper, Wallace Richards, Gary Maupin, Chris Coffey, George Payne, Bob Barnes, Rick Wilson, Justin Burris, Barry Corbin, and Doyle Lloyd. Friday night, July 10, 2009, in a guest cameo appearance will be Adair County High School's fantastic football Coach, Eric Graves.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Fair food. Walking Taco

2009-07-09 - Adair Co. Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Doyle Lloyd.
The Adair County Band Boosters can't lay claim to inventing the Walking Taco, sometimes called Corn Chip Pie, but they can claim, at least for the World Record Book of Guinesses, that in the year of Our Lord 2009, at the Adair County Fair, the meal in a tray was perfected. It's called a Walking Taco because it can be eaten while walking the fairgrounds - with the meal in a tray and a plastic fork. This unique Walking Taco creation is from the culinary genius of Band Boosters Shannon Thomas and Judy Keltner. The dish is prepared with the freshest lettuce, red ripe tomatoes, sweet white onions, corn chips, and taco meat sauce one would find on opening day at the finest Tex-Mex restaurant.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Fair food. Beef brisket

2009-07-09 - Adair Co. Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Doyle Lloyd.
WOW! The boy had to learn to cook this from his father, Carl Harris, one of Adair County's all-time great cooks! MIke Harris is the President of Shoreline Communications - the WAVE and the Big Dawg - and a heck of a lawyer, but he may be forever drafted now that the cat is out of the bag and now that his fame as a brisket chef is so widespread. One sandwich is enough to feed a whole bunch of old folks, and would nearly fill up a teen age boy. While the EK series is not given to hyperbole, we'd have to rank this sandwich, just on appearance alone, right up there with the greatest Fair Food debuts, right up there with the introduction of the ice cream cone at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. -EW
