Honey Bee Day, July 16, 2009, at TC Extension Office Green River Beekeepers will offer opportunity to see actual working bees glass walled hive By Barbara Armitage Adair County Garden Club You're invited to celebrate and appreciate bees and their honey on Thursday, July 16, 2009. The Green River Beekeepers will be buzzing all about the Taylor County Extension Office, 1143 S. Columbia Avenue, Campbellsville, KY, from 1:00 to 5:00pmET. There will be an observation hive where you can see actual working bees contained in a glass-walled hive cross-section. Look for the queen while you sample honey granola and honey lemonade. Learn about the seasons of a beehive and an apiary, particularly the current process of extracting summer's honey. Different types of extraction equipment will be on display, both large-scale electric and a hobbyist's hand-turn apparatus. Introduce yourself to a friendly larger-than-life bee, just as sweet as she can be, all dressed up in a bee costume. Actual-size beekeepers will be wandering through the crowd in traditional beesuits--a veil and overalls--with, of course, a smoker. Photos of swarms and area beehives will be on display as well. In this region beekeepers' apiaries range from just one hive on up to a couple hundred hives. Some of the Green River Beekeepers are backyard hobbyists fascinated with the little workers buzzing among their garden flowers. Others maintain multiple beeyards in several areas, producing large quantities of honey for commercial use. Members of the club will be on hand to share their stories and reminisce with you. Honey Bee Awareness Day is a celebration of all things bee-related: bees (drones, workers, the queen), pollination of crops and flowers, weather patterns, insecticide caution, honey recipes, beeswax candles and, of course, the sweet golden honey they produce. Stop by on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Taylor County Extension Office to meet your high-flying neighbors. Let's give the winged bees a hand! Contact Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 or the Adair County Garden Club at adaircountygardenclub@gmail.com for more information. This story was posted on 2009-07-08 09:38:33
