Tips for Fireworks Photography

There are 3 things needed to get a nice fireworks shot:
  1. Focus at infinity and then turn off the autofocus. There isn't anything to focus on when the firework launches anyway, and you already know where the camera needs to be focused. You don't want it hunting in the dark instead of taking pictures.

  2. Set the shutter speed to 8, 15, or even 30 seconds. The exact time depends somewhat on the camera you're using and the conditions.

  3. Use a tripod or a sturdy support. I find it's nearly impossible to handhold a long exposure.

It can take a little experimentation to get the shutter speed that works best, and then a little more to get the timing down. I try to start the picture just as I see a firework launch, to get the trail going up and the starburst.
