Casey, Russell High School students in Upward Bound program Summer Challenge takes place at the SCC Russell Center, Russell Springs, KY> Click on headline for full story and photo By Dave Cazalet, Jr., SCC Director of Public Relations For many young people summer time means sleeping late and long days of doing nothing, but for Somerset Community College's Upward Bound Students it means getting up and heading out for another challenging day. For the second consecutive year, a select number of Russell and Casey students are participating in a Summer Challenge at the Russell Center in Russell Springs, KY. The Upward Bound serves high school students who are enrolled in grades 9-12 and meet certain economic guideline and/or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound provides assistance to participants as they prepare for college. The program provides academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature and foreign languages. In addition, the program provides services in tutoring, counseling and cultural enrichment. Set to a "Survivor" Theme, students have been assigned to teams and have chosen tribal names and mascots. Each week students face academic as well as physical challenges as they try to win the contest. To date students have traveled to Mammoth Cave, learned creative skills, heard speakers from various cultures including the Philippines, Brazil, Belize, Mexico and the Appalachian region as well as traveled to Berea College to learn about admission requirements and scholarship information. In addition, students are learning science skills by participating in "CSI/Upward Bound." During this event students met with a "real detective," who talked with them about observation skills, collected evidence from a crime scene, and analyzed that evidence in a lab setting. Still to come are many wonderful opportunities for students. ACT preparation, Communications and Study Skills will be hosted in a workshop format to prepare students for the next school year. The group will be traveling to the Somerset Campus of Somerset Community College to meet with various program representatives and to SCC's Clinton Center to participate in a Field Day with the Upward Bound students from Clinton and Wayne Counties. While participating in Field Day, students will be competing in academic and physical challenges including an opportunity to climb the "Rock Wall," provided by the National Guard. The students in Upward Bound were selected through an application and interview process. For more information contact the Upward Bound Director Judy Tallent at (606) 387-3717 or Winfrey Bates, Assistant Director, at (270) 858-6501. Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education. SCC has campuses in Somerset and London, centers in Clinton, McCreary, Casey, and Russell Counties.
