COMMENT: Good day to experience Urban Heat Island With highs in the 90s today, and the Public Square in Downtown Columbia freshly blacktopped, it's a good time to experience an urban heat island and what happens in a different micro-climates within yards of each other. Crossing from a shady lane to an older, grayer parking lot is like moving from one climate zone to another. Step across the the line from old, gray paving to the dark black, new paving, and it's evident how much blacktopping affects comfort. -CM This story was posted on 2009-06-24 11:49:53
