Current students Valarie Cooper of Jamestown and Jeff Tyree of London accepted the Outstanding PTA Program Award for the program's participation in the 2009 Georgia State-Marquette Challenge.

Edwards receives Outstanding Student Award

Edwards received the 2009 American Physical Therapy Association's Outstanding PTA Student Award. The award is presented annually to one student nationwide who has demonstrated excellence in academics, community service, campus involvement, and who has demonstrated a commitment to the profession of physical therapy.

Edwards was praised for his role of Philanthropic and Charitable Events Chairperson for the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization and for clinical and academic excellence by APTA President Scott Ward. This is the third year in a row for an SCC student to be honored with the award. Heather Tuel of Somerset was the 2007 winner and Bethany Gosser of Liberty was the 2008 winner.

Buis receives Mary McMillan Scholarship

Buis received the Mary McMillan Scholarship Award, which honors Mary McMillan, a dedicated pioneer of physical therapy in the United States and abroad, the founding President of the American Physical Therapy Association, and an esteemed teacher. The intent of the award is to recognize students who exhibit superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contribution. Awards are made on a competitive basis and recipients are selected based upon superior scholastic performance, past productivity, evidence of potential contribution to physical therapy and service to the American Physical Therapy Association. Buis has been active at the local, state and national levels and is highly respected by his peers and members of the profession and has received recognition and numerous awards for his community service and academic background.

"Jeff has been an outstanding representative of our program and our profession," states PTA Program Director Ron Meade. "He has already made a significant contribution to our profession through his many activities I know that he will continue to be a strong voice for the concerns of the profession and will make a positive lasting impact."

The SCC PTA program was also recognized as the "Most Successful PTA Program" in the Georgia State - Marquette Challenge. This event is a national fundraiser for physical therapy research and conducted in conjunction with other Foundation for Physical Therapy fundraisers. Students in the 2009 and 2010 SCC PTA Program classes participated in the fundraising effort. Valarie Cooper and Jeff Tyree accepted the award on behalf of the program at the Foundation for Physical Therapy's annual Dinner-Dance Celebration.

The overall winner of the event was the University of Miami (FL). Other institutions that were recognized included: The University of Colorado-Denver, Georgia State University, Sacred Heart University, the University of Pittsburgh, Arcadia University, Boston University, Emory University, Indiana University, Ithaca College, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Mayo School of Health Science, Midwestern University, Quinnipac University, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, SUNY Upstate Medical University, University of Iowa, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Evansville, University of Delaware, University of Oklahoma, University of Southern California, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Students tour historic Fort McHenry

While attending the conference, the students had additional opportunities to participate in other local activities including tours of historic Fort McHenry and historic sailing vessels, visits to the National Aquarium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards and a trip to Washington, DC. A highlight of the trip for Jeff Buis was an opportunity to meet former House Speaker Newt Gingrich during the conference's opening ceremonies. The group also met a number of leaders in the physical therapy field including Dr. Stanley Paris, Dr. Marilyn Moffett, Dr. Sam Brown, and Dr. Connie Hauser.

The SCC PTA program has been recognized nationally every year since 2006. Most recently, students enrolled in the program were named national winners of the APTA Geriatrics Section's Educational Brochure Design Competition and Barry Buchignani of Lexington was named the APTA National Orthopaedic Student of the Year for 2009.
