Co-Chair of 2009 RFL sends thanks for highly successful year

I wanted to thank everyone that came out Friday night and participated in our 13th annual Relay for Life. We had a wonderful turnout, and for the first time in a long time the weather finally cooperated with us.

We had 22 teams come out and set up their tents for the long haul. The night started off with a celebrity couple, Al and Peggy Bundy, making a guest appearance. Since it was an 80's theme, Julie Brockman and I decided we would go as one of Tv's funniest couples.

We had several games throughout the night, but the most entertaining was the "Not So Newlywed" game. 12 couples fought it out to win one of our fabulous prizes. They were subjected to some pretty tough questions.

A sample of which was "Guys if your mother-in-law was an animal, which animal would see be and why?". After a lot of squirming, Daniel and Ashley Adams took home the prize.

We also had several entries in the Womanless Beauty pageant, and the Dude looks like a Lady contest. Danny Bragg, Robbie Harmon, Chris Bragg, Ricky Roy, Traci Sharpe, David Campbell all dressed up in drag and worked the crowd for donations for votes.

With David Campbell taking top honors. He was so focused on winning this year that he went all out. Wearing fake nails, full make-up, a dress worn in the Dancing with the Stars (Glenda Butler's), and also topped it off by having Peggy Lawson shave his legs!

In my opinion, with that dedication, he deserved to win. Although we had lot's of fun, and fellowship, we didn't forget the real reason we were there. We honored all our survivors with medallions, survivor shirts, and the teams made up trinkets to give out to them all.

We also Remembered the ones that had lost their battle with a moving luminary ceremony. Topped off by lighting a candle in memory of all of them.

At around midnight Wes Bryant came out with our total for the year. When it was all said and done, this community dug deep once again for this wonderful cause.

With an amazing $86,000! With no disrespect to Taylor County, - which has a lot more industry, factories, and jobs - we beat them by around $20,000. That just goes to show you what a wonderful county we live in.

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone on the committee, all the teams, everyone who donated, the survivors, sponsors, the media, and everyone who attended.

Thank you for all that you have done to make Adair County's Relay for Life a success. So that in the future no one will ever have to hear those terrible words "You have cancer".

Thank you Adair County!

KELLY JONES and DONNIE PERRY were building a fire for marshmallow and weenie roasts last night at the big 2009 Adair County Relay for Life, Friday evening, June 12, 2009 at twilight. The operation was located well behind the campsite of the Columbia Baptist Church RFL team site.
