Re: Sheila Hare's kind remarks about the public parking lot beside Jefferson Alley. I thank her, but honestly, I did not pay her!

The grant which paid for supplies, but not labor, came from Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development (SEKTDA), referred to also as TourSEKY.

Its headquarters is The Center for Rural Development in Somerset. This grant was to help enhance the appearance of a town. It required matching input from owners of the buildings and the city.

SEKTDA also granted the funds for the quilt boards hung on six barns in Adair and in the five other counties in our corridor group.

In the parking lot, the city rebuilt the falling apart wall. David Waltz, artist of unique pottery and ceramics, at the Heart's Image, came up with the free form design for the wall and volunteered his time to paint it with me. I chose colors yellow for sunshine, green for grassy rolling hills, and blue for water. The quilt design made and installed by Sign America repeats the colors.

The wall now holds top soil donated by Richard Walker and pencil holly trees and grass planted by the city. Owners of three buildings found ways to get them painted and repaired.

I'm hoping we all can look around and notice ways we can each make the appearance of Columbia and the roads leading into Columbia look better.

s/Vonnie Kolbenschlag
