Centuries old Mt. Gilead Baptist Church getting new building Mt. Gilead Baptist congregation is building new 6,400 s.f. - on two floors - structure. Parts of the old structure is 208 years old! Lively congregation has seen attendance grow in recent years from 15-20 to around 100 each Sunday. Groundbreaking ceremony unusual, and spiritually moving one Click on headline for full story with photo By Pastor James Walker Mt. Gilead Baptist Church recently broke ground for a new Church facility. Our old church has been there since 1801 (or parts of it), and as our congregation is growing in leaps and bound, we're outgrowing the building. So about a year ago, with much prayer, we set a committee in place to start plans for a new structure. It will be It will be 40 ft by 80 ft, with a full basement for Sunday school rooms and fellowship hall. Construction is underway As God has blessed us in every way, we now have our basement dug, and will quickly set forth with construction. Our groundbreaking service went as follows, I, Pastor James Walker, felt like I needed to place a Bible that was given to me before I preached my first message in 1995, in the ground before a floor was ever poured. So we placed the Holy Bible, in the ground, and each member, and some others, had their hand in shoveling dirt back over the Bible. Some folks may wonder why I did this, but I take scripture very serious. The Bible says, "Upon this Rock, I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." Then we anointed each corner of the basement with oil, praying corporately as a church body. Many folks came for this service, and we had a wonderful time of fellowship, and prayer. Mt. Gilead has average attendance of 100 or so Mt. Gilead Baptist Church has an average attendance of 100 or so on any given Sunday. There was a time when I, (James Walker) first was called as pastor, attendance had dropped to 15 or 20. With God's blessings and a lot of help from a wonderful group of people who are dedicated to the Lord, we have witnessed many folks give their lives to the Lord. Like I said, God has surely blessed us. Church has top musicians We are a church that is very lively, and love to worship. We have a great group of musicians, and a church full of singing talent.
