June Dairy month is underway. Adair #3 producer in State

County is home to 6,700 dairy cows, 60 dairy farms

By Nick Roy, Adair Co. Extension Agentfor Agriculture & Natural Resources

June is Dairy Month and time to celebrate!

The dairy industry has long been a valuable asset to Adair County. Adair County proudly boasts 60 dairy farms and ranks 3rd in Kentucky in volume of milk produced on an annual basis.

Adair County is the home of 6,700 dairy cows making the average herd size 112 cows, not including heifers.

Most of the dairy cows in Adair County are Holsteins, but there are also several Jerseys, Crossbreeds, and a few Brown Swiss and Guernsey. One university study shows that one dairy cow creates an economic output ripple of $13,737.

Using that figure, the Adair County dairy industry is worth over 92 million dollars to the economy.

It was started in 1937 by grocer organizations sponsoring "National Milk Month." By 1939, it became "Dairy Month," promoting the use of all dairy foods and saluting America's dairy farmers. June Dairy Month has become a time to honor the contributions of dairy farmers and their families who work hard every day to provide fresh, wholesome milk and milk products for all of us to enjoy.

The recent decrease in the price of milk received by dairy farmers and increased operating costs has threatened many dairies across the nation, including many here in Adair County. Milk prices of 2009 have been the lowest they have been since 2003 and most input costs have doubled, some have tripled.

It is probably more important this year than ever that we embrace our local dairymen in celebrating June Dairy Month by promoting the consumption of dairy products.

Whether it is a cold glass of milk, a cone of ice cream, cup of yogurt, or your favorite slice of cheese that you enjoy, it all started with a dairyman or woman who has spent countless hours to providing you and your family with a safe and healthy product.

The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, Kentucky Dairy Development Council, SUDIA, Local Media, Local Agribusinesses and Adair County Dairymen kicked off June Dairy Month with a live remote broadcast by WAIN at Randall Burton's Dairy Farms.

A second live remote broadcast will be held at Rowe Farms, 871 Keltner RD, Columbia, KY on June 18, 2009 by WHVE.

On June 24, 2009, a Dairy Farm Business Analysis Training will be held at the Taylor County Extension Office, starting at 10:00amCT.

On June 26, 2009, all dairy producers are invited to attend a Dairy Farmer Appreciation Picnic at the Adair County Fairgrounds, 413 Fairgrounds ST, Columbia, KY at 6:30pmCT For more information on any of these events, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at (270) 384-2317.(Sources: KY NASS, SUDIA)
