Four Columbia, KY area State Parks get national recognition

What local government and tourism leaders have been saying all along has been affirmed: Columbia, KY, is right in the middle of some of America's top vacation spots. Recent ratings by Reserve America recognized Kentucky State Park sites at Green River Lake, Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow, and Barren River as among nation's best, and it's part of the strategy for marketing Columbia and Adair County

Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton said she was in no way surprised when the Kentucky Department of Tourism reported that ReserveAmerica has recognized the Green River Campground as one of the 100 Top Family Campgrounds in America.

"We've been saying all along that Columbia's central location right in the middle of four great lakes is one of the most under appreciated assets this community has," she said, "I know the Adair County Tourism Board is promoting that idea."

Adair County Tourism Executive Director Sue Stivers, reached at her office on Friday, was been working to meet a Monday deadline to get a Development and Marketing Plan into Frankfort, KY, and didn't have time for a long interview on the subject "But I've been saying for a long time that Columbia and Adair County benefit not only from our strategic position as a major highway hub in South Central Kentucky, but also by our proximity to these four lakes.

"Now that ReserveAmerica has given high ratings to attractions at Green River, Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow and Barren River, I'm hoping more Adair Countians will appreciate the strategic location we have as a staging area for fishing, water sports, and lake side sight seeing."

ReserveAmerica gave high marks to the following lakes, and Stivers told how the each of the lakes fit into vacations with Columbia as starting point:
  • Green River State Park Campground, located between Columbia and Campbellsville in Taylor County at 179 Park Office RoadPhone 270-465-8255 was recognized in the top 100 Family Campgrounds. Stivers said the campground is "Just 14 miles from the Courthouse in Columbia, less than 25 minutes away." But she added, "Of course we always mention the Campground at Holmes Bend, in Adair County, first."

  • Lake Cumberland State Resort Park in Russell County near Jamestown was recognized as one of the top Fishing Spots and as a top Water Recreation Park. The park is located at 5465 State Park RD, Jamestown, KY 42629, Phone (270) 343-3111 "Just 29 miles from the courthouse in Columbia," Stivers said, "and it's one of the prettiest 29 miles anybody can drive anywhere."

  • Dale Hollow State Park, in Cumberland County near Burkesville, KY, was recognized as a top Horse Friendly Park. It's at 6371 State Park RD,Burkesville, KY 42717. Phone (270) 433-7431 "Now this is a real jewel," Stivers said, "and so much closer than a lot of Adair Countians realize. It's 40 miles away." she said, "And some of the roads are curvy," but about an hour will get tourists there from the Square in Columbia, KY.

  • Barren River State Park, in Barren County near Glasgow, KY, was recognized as a top Kid Friendly Park, at 149 State Park RdGlasgow, KY 42156. Phone (270) 646-2151. "This one is the greatest distance from Columbia, KY, at 50 miles," Stivers said, "but in time, it's really close, only about an hour's drive from our office at 201 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY."
Planning help is available from the Tourism Commission

"The thing is," Stivers said, "regardless of where anyone staying or living in Columbia want to go in the Four Lakes Area, we've got information and contacts to assist them right here in the Chamber Building. All anyone has to do is stop in the offcie at 201 Burkesville ST, or call (270) 384-6020 and Kathy or I will be happy to assist them."When ReserveAmerica, a recreation reservation service, determined the top campgrounds and locations, over 4,000 parks were reviewed and evaluated on criteria including educational programs, overall beauty and scenery, family beaches, visitor centers and camping amenities such as hot showers and laundry facilities. The featured locations were also selected based on testimonials, campground ratings and feedback provided by park rangers, regional park management and campers throughout the year.

The Kentucky State Parks have 31 campgrounds with 2,600 sites. The sites have water and electric hookups, showers, restrooms and laundry facilities. Information about each park and campground, along with online reservations, is available at www.parks.ky.gov
