A Comment on Preservation from Oklahoma Kentuckian A lesson for Adair County, KY, in the tale of two Oklahoma cities, Enid and Guthrie; Guthrie is prospering from preservation To ColumbiaMagazine.com: The Adair County courthouse is a landmark and Columbia would not seem the same without it. I grew up in Adair County, graduated from ACHS and now live in Oklahoma. Every year we return to Adair County for a visit. Thinking about the discussion on the Adair County courthouse brings to mind a situation in this area. Enid, Oklahoma has often removed older buildings and landmarks as they age. I heard comments on this often back in 2007 as Oklahoma had it's centennial celebration. Guthrie, another community about an hour away has preserved many of its old buildings and history, resulting in many visitors walking about. The visitors take pictures of the older buildings, historical sites, visit museums, stay in local lodging, eat in local restaurants and generally spend their money in the community. Seems to me the historical value of a community and its preservation has an economic impact on the area. Just my thoughts. s/Rachel Lyons This story was posted on 2009-05-29 11:15:01
