Some bold proposals for Downtown Columbia

Plan would change priorities to make Downtown a more people friendly place

By Billy Joe Fudge

Sue Stivers is correct; Columbia is a great place to live. However, Downtown Columbia is not a great place to safely live, visit, shop, or just hang out. The story and pictures concerning the wedding at Shelbyville should remind us to once again look at our own Downtown and what we can be, not what we are.

We should try to project what our Downtown will look like in 10 years if we maintain the status quo. Do we want to, at that time, be having these same discussions about how to revitalize Downtown Columbia or do we want to begin to do some things that will provide a more people, pedestrian, shopper, and visitor friendly atmosphere?

There are some things we can do and or petition others to do for us that cost almost nothing.
  1. Lower the speed limit to access Downtown from the present 25 to 15.
  2. Lower the speed limit around the square from the present 25 to 10.
  3. Move the yield signs from the square down to the incoming traffic side of our cross walks.
  4. Move the traffic out from the Courthouse at least 10 feet to allow only one lane of traffic around the square and at the same time provide a Downtown Park Lawn for sitting, walking and enjoying the exterior of the Courthouse.
Additionally this should provide sufficient area for installing geo-thermal heat and air for the Courthouse which I believe Judge Melton said at a recent Fiscal Court meeting that she might be able to get some state or federal funding for.

What do you think, Columbia/Adair County?
