Cundiffs gift helps raise SCC scholarship fund by $537,576

Generosity of the late William and Julia Cundiff results in $500,000 increase in SCC scholarship funds

By David Cazalet, Jr., Public Affairs Somerset Community College

A bequest in the will of the late William and Julia Cundiff of Somerset, coupled with a matching gift from the Kentucky Community and Technical College (KCTCS) Endowment Trust, has resulted in more than a $500,000 increase in the scholarship funds available to students at Somerset Community College.

In their will, the Cundiffs left $268,758 to SCC to be used for scholarships. The Cundiffs' donation was matched by the KCTCS Endowment Trust for a total donation of $537,576.

"William and Julia Cundiff were generous supporters of Somerset Community College," said Dr. Jo Marshall, President and CEO of SCC. "In past years they had made donations to the SCC Theatre Program and to our Partners for Progress campaign. This generous gift and the matching amount from the KCTCS Endowment Trust will mean that more scholarships will be provided to many deserving students in future years. This is indeed wonderful news."

The half million dollars will be part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College Edowment. Beginning in 2010, interest from the money will provide new scholarships in perpetuity for SCC students.

"The Cundiffs had been supporters of SCC since 1973," said Ann Zwick, the Chief Institutional Advancement Officer at the College. "Their bequest means we will be able to offer more scholarships for students who attend SCC from Pulaski and adjacent counties. The Cundiffs supported many cultural, civic, and church organizations throughout their community. This gift to SCC is one more example of their generosity."

The fund, including the KCTCS match, will be known as the William and Julia Cundiff Scholarship Endowment.

The KCTCS Endowment Trust matches gifts to KCTCS colleges, including SCC. In order to be eligible for the match, gifts must exceed $50,000. This year a total of one million dollars was available to be matched by donations to KCTCS colleges.

William Brown Cundiff passed away in April, 1999. He was a mechanical engineer and had retired from Exxon. Julia Smekta Cundiff passed away in June, 2003. She was a registered nurse. She was also a member of St. Mildred's Catholic Church in Somerset.
