Sewer service now available to Green Hills, Parrott Avenue

By Cindy Lackey

COLUMBIA, KY -- Sewer service is now available to 73 homes along Parrott Avenue and in the Green Hills Subdivision. The "tap on" fee will be waived for residents who sign up for sewer service by August 1, 2009.

The City of Columbia recently finished extending sewer lines to the area from the city's wastewater treatment plant. Septic systems tend to fail in the area due to poor soil conditions.

"It means a lot to the city and a lot to the area residents in that it corrects a long existing health problem caused by septic tanks and poor perculation," said Mayor Patrick R. Bell. "It makes for a better place to live."

The $1 million sewer project was funded with $500,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission, a $350,000 grant from PRIDE, a $115,000 loan from USDA Rural Development and a $100,000 grant from USDA Rural Development.

"I congratulate Columbia's leaders and citizens for giving more homes access to safe, sanitary sewer service," said PRIDE's Karen Engle. "Residents in the affected area will no longer struggle with septic systems that just don't work. The whole community will benefit from cleaner groundwater and the economic boost that comes from an investment in public infrastructure."

PRIDE is a nonprofit organization that promotes environmental cleanup and education efforts in 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky. Since 1997, PRIDE funds have been used to expand sewer service or install septic systems at 28,000 homes.
