Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a preventable birth defect All types of alchohol taken during pregnancy can be harmful to fetus. A plea: Please don't drink if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant. By Marsha Van Hook & Daniel W. Phillips III Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is 100% preventable unlike many other birth defects. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a group of physical, behavioral, and cognitive abnormalities that can occur to unborn babies when pregnant women drink alcohol and pass the alcohol along to their unborn babies. FAS babies are identified by abnormal facial features, central nervous system problems, and slowness of growth. Not all children have all of the characteristics of FAS but generally demonstrate learning and behavioral problems. Approximately 25% of the FAS individuals have developmental disabilities. The Center for Disease Control & Prevention studies have found FAS prevalence rates to range from 2 to 15 cases per 10,000 live births. All types of alcohol can cause FAS. The Arc of Lake Cumberland is an advocacy, education, group that promotes full inclusion in all areas of life for persons with intellectual disabilities: play, education, work, and places of worship. For more information on how to prevent FAS or about the Arc of Lake Cumberland you may contact Marsha Van Hook @ (606) 875-9890 or marshavanhook@hotmail.com or Daniel Phillips @ (270) 789-7465 or phillipsd@lindsey.edu. Please don't drink if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant. This story was posted on 2009-04-21 09:28:39
