Memorable Old Columbia, KY: Dogwoods and Clocktower

2009-04-12 - From East Fortune ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
DOGWOODS and WINTER BRANCHES still allow a peek through at the Adair County clocktower, a reminder of the question of what the next phase in the life of the building will be. The dogwoods are a reminder of the late Coy Downey, Columbia's mayor when a major dogwood planting was undertaken. Columbia didn't have an Adair County Garden Club to give guidance to enthusiastic replanters, as it does today, and many of the dogwoods died. But that's not the important part, which is: Many lived. Many of us have bright sights out our windows because of that dogwood drive headed by Mayor Downey, who was also the unforgettable Mayor who campaigned on a promise to make roses bloom in January.
