The Story of the Easter Ducklings

2009-04-10 - Adair County, KY - Photo photos by Clara Conover; collage by Betty Sue Jasper.
A True Story with a Happy Ending

Once upon a time (back in the early 1960's) there was a little girl named Betty Sue who was given two baby ducks for Easter. She loved those little ducklings and put them in their own swimming pool in her backyard on Wall Street in Columbia. Betty Sue noticed that the ducks only swam on top of the water and never got their heads wet. She wanted them to swim underwater, so she pushed their little heads down under the water just to help them out . Luckily, Betty Sue's mother was close by and rescued the little ducks. She took them in the house and dried them out on a heating pad.

After the ducks recovered, Betty Sue and her mother and father took the ducks to live on a farm out in the county. A year later Betty Sue went to visit her Easter Ducks and found that they had grown up and made a complete recovery from their underwater adventure. And everyone lived happily ever after. The End

Bridges of Adair Co., KY: Footbridge on Pelham Branch Road

2009-04-11 - Pelham Branch Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
LIKE A TROUBLED BRIDGE OVER MOSTLY PLACID WATERS: This out-of-use footbridge over Pelham Branch on PBR is located across from the spectacular Hood Cemetery Road hill. It's utility now is as a relic of some other wonderful time past, as a stimulus for rememories, and to add interest and beauty to the scenic wayside present. The location is north of the Russell Creek Bridge and north of the confluence of the two streams, and south of Hutchison Community Church. Margaret Smith Harden writes that she remembers when her late father, Richard Smith, built the footbridge, which goes to their family's homeplace. Corrections, recollections, and additions about this footbridge are welcome.-CM.

Memorable Old Columbia, KY: A trinity of towers

2009-04-11 - Burkesville ST at Church ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
ROBERT STONE of LEBANON, TN says "When you drive fast enough, It doesn't matter what the scenery looks like." Columbia and Adair County have so many indelible picture opportunities that even "drive-by shootings" render extraordinary photographs. But how the opportunities multiply at ground level, ambling slowly. This scene, a trinity of steeples, is only captured while walking on Burkesville ST. The steeple on church in the foreground tops one of Kentucky's most treasured landmarks, the Columbia Union Presbyterian Church. In between the famed Adair County Courthouse clocktower and the Presbyterian Church the eclectic nature of architecture in Columbia is maintained with the more modern Columbia United Methodist Church steeple.

Uniquely marbled Easter Eggs await the Easter Bunny

2009-04-11 - District 5, Adair County, KY - Photo by Cindy Meyer.
MARBLED EGGS A FAMILY TRADITION, BUT NOT SO SECRET ANYMORE: The hen that produced these eggs was indeed being fed laying mash, not sour mash," writes Cindy Meyer. "Nor were they painstakingly colored with a Magic Marker. For kicks and giggles, I Googled our age old family tradition, only to find out the whole world already knows the 'secret' to producing the unique marbled colored Easter Eggs, which are ordinary store bought eggs dyed with onion skins." Above Easter Eggs dyed organically with onion skins, resting on a bed of Sassafras root bark, awaits for the ever elusive Easter Bunny. Photo April 10, 2009, by Cindy Meyer

A great time at the Louisville Zoo

2009-04-11 - Louisville Zoo, 1100 Trevilian Way, Louisville, KY 40213 - Photo by Melanie Ollery.
SO CUTE!!! "The pretty patch of Easter lillies (daffodils) were in full bloom at the Louisville Zoo when we visited," writes Melanie Ollery of her trip there last Saturday, April 4, 2009. Noah Ollery, her son, left photo, is posing for his mom. She continues, "We all had a beautiful sunny visit, and," she says, "we got a surprise sight-the baby giraffe, Bakari, got to come outside. His name means 'hopeful.' When was born February 17, 2009, he had trouble standing up. He has had surgery since then and is doing great. You have to admit," she concludes, "He is so cute!!!"
