Walking Columbia, KY: To appreciate sight and smell of lilacs

2009-04-10 - Frazier Avenue, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
WITH A GREAT NETWORK OF SIDEWALKS, the best way to really see Columbia is by walking. Strolling is not just for health this time of year, it's fun. One of the rewards, today, is the full panacles of blossoms on heritage shrubs. The clean, sweet, spring fresh fragrance is wonderful. The traffic on the crossroad is on Burkesville Street. The road leading on at the top of the hill is West Frazier Avenue. These lilacs are protected by Maxine Walker. See also: "When lilacs last in the doorway bloom'd" from from Memories of President Lincoln by Walt Whitman, at Poet's Corner.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Columbia, from A to B

2009-04-10 - From Chamber Building Parking Lot, E. Fortune ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
ONE OF COLUMBIA'S MOST INTRIGUING SKYLINES is from the back of the buildings. This scene schools the Adair County Courthouse all the way to Begley Chapel, with so much in between, including from left, the peach and green Ben Arnold Building (old Firestone, Susan Lynn's, Mitzi's Store; the Harris Law Office building (old Brown Drug, Lowe's Drug stores); the Country Junction Building (the old Herb Taylor, Doug Moseley, Jerry Vaughan Men's Store and Hattie Lee Willis Dress Shop; the Cafe on the Square (the old Owen's Men's Shop, Donna Vaughan antique store, M&M Furniture, and Joe Allison Nu-Art Studio builiding); then the Manor Abbey Art Store (the old Wooten's Department Store); next, the brown brick is the First & Farmers National Bank (the old Adair County News office and First National Bank building); peeking over the white roof of the original First National Bank Building, Radio Shack (the old Jeffries, formerly Davis Hardware Building); and to the right of that, the Reed Street side of Columbiana (the old Russell and Co. building, which, on this end, once house Willis Cleaners and later, Hudson Willis' radio and Tv shop, the birthplace of City Tv, the progenitor of the Columbia cable operation of Duo-County Telecom. In the midground, right, is the historic Walker, later Cole, now Burton Tin Shop, fronting on S. Reed Street, and Reed, far right, is the 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia's famous Dream Depot. In the far right are the golden crowns of Begley Chapel, Lindsey Wilson Colleges signature building. Back over on the right hand side, in the foreground, is the City of Columbia's Street Department Building, originally a liquor dispensary, later a cab stand; the next building on the left is the Richard Lee Walker Building, and next one if Adair Farm Bureau, South agency. Barely seen, on the left by the City Street Department Building, is the new bicycle rack secured through a SEKDTA grant written by Vonnie Kolbenschlag. The large municipal parking lot gets heavy use in the day, but is usually vacant when there are no shows at Dream Depot. The lot is a wonderful place for bike rides without extreme exertion.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Kayaking on Green River Lake

2009-04-10 - Between Plum Point and Snake Creek Boat Ramp, Green River Lake, Adair Co. KY - Photo by David Grigsby, Lindsey Wilson College Cycling Coach.
The Lindsey Wilson College Cyclists tried another sport Wednesday, April 8, 2009--kayaking on Green River Lake. "We put in under the bridge on KY 206," Cycling Coach Dave Grigsby writes, "and paddled to the Snake Creek Boat Ramp." The trip too about 2.5 hours, he said. "The moderate flow rate made for some interesting Class 1 Whitewater in someof the narrower channels, but that was not an issue even with our lake kayaks." All in all, it was a great day, he said, and recommends it highly to Adair Countians. "This is a must do for any locals who want to try paddling. Very addictive."
