Everyone loves Olive, the now returned boxer mix

2009-04-06 - Gradyville, KY - Photo By Frances Salyers.
TERRY RICE, the rescuer of Olive, George Johnson's almost all black boxer mix dog which strayed from Jones Chapel Road last night, let her visit with Austin Lee, who loved the dog enough he took time out from riding his stick horse just so he could feed Olive. Olive is now back home, back up on Jones Chapel Road, after George Johnson put a message on CM that the dog, a beloved bed, was missing. The dog was back home in less than 24 hours.

Epicurean Kentuckian abroad in SC: Sam's Corner hotdog

Kentuckian not fooled by alligator's kindly eye, deceptive grin

2009-04-07 - Wild Kingdom, SC - Photo by Pen.
A KINDLY LOOKING ALLIGATOR CLOSE UP, appears a benevolent sort of fellow, but don't be fooled, he has the heart of the Walrus and the Carpenter. His smile belies the fact that he's as Columbia naturalist Alan W. Reed says of all creatures, and is "just out trying to make a living." A carnivore, he's out to eat what he can catch: Fish, birds, mammals, of which humankind is one, so it's best for people to give ground and not be et.

Birds of KY: Egret in South Carolina; sometimes seen in WKY

2009-04-07 - South Carolina, USA - Photo by Pen.
Though not found throughout the state of Kentucky, egrets are seen, on occasion in Western Kentucky. Kentucky author Bobbie Ann Mason, while in Columbia a few years back for the filming of In Country at the Columbian Theater, said that some of the birds showed up on location in Kentucky when the movie was being filmed there. This discovery saved the filming crew a trip to another location to film the flashback where Bruce Willis' character remembered white birds in Vietnam. See also, Bobbie Ann Mason at Slider

A few of my favorite books, by Candice Robertson

2009-04-07 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Candice Robertson.
"These are some of my favorites that I couldn't do without," writes Candice Compton Robertson. "I read To Kill a Mockingbird every Spring with my Freshmen, and it never gets old. Jesse Stuart is probably my favoite, though; he is the only person who could make you fall in love with a black snake.
