Margaret Taylor: Thoreauvian experience in Pulaski Co., KY

Two hour visit was all too short and left writer wishing for more

By Margaret Taylor

On Thursday, April 2, 2009 Sammy and I had the opportunity to visit some friends in Pulaski County, KY, and tour their restored ancestral farm and log cabin. It was so beautiful, but pictures do not do it justice. While there, I couldn't help but think of Henry David Thoreau and Walden's Pond. Thoreau longed for the simple life with the sounds, smells, and looks of the woods, water and wildlife.

There was a time in my life when I could not understand that. Being someone who loves to camp out in a Hampton Inn or Best Western, I could never see myself staying in the backwoods with nothing.

Still not wanting to be a survivalist, today helped me realize how Thoreau felt and why he spent two years there. The sounds of the small waterfall, the birds chirping, little squirrels scurrying through the woods, and even the wind were wonderfully simple and serene. Spending two hours seemed only minutes and left me wanting more.
