British pianist Martin Jones returns to LWC Tues., March 31, 2009

Martin Jones is one of Britain's highly regarded solo pianists

COLUMBIA, KY - British pianist Martin Jones returns to Lindsey Wilson College on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. at 7:00pmCT on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in the W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, located south of the landmark Begley Chapel at the corner of Lindsey Wilson ST, and Helen Flatt Drive, Columbia, KY. His recital is free and open to the public.

Jones, who has been among the more popular performers in the Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series, will perform "Form and Emotion in Virtuosic Piano Music."



Jones will perform compositions by Felix Mendelssohn ("Prelude and Fugue Op. 35 No. 1"); Frederic Chopin ("Polonaise Fantasie"); Charles-Valentin Alkan ("Festin d'Esope"); Carl Czerny ("Nocturne Op. 647"); Isaac Albeniz ("Three Pieces from Iberia"); Moriz Rosenthal ("Carnaval de Vienne!"); and four transcriptions by Leopold Godowsky.

Jones is among Britain's highly regarded solo pianists. A prolific recording artist, Jones has recorded numerous discs for Nimbus Records, including the complete solo piano works of Brahms, Debussy, Grainger, Korngold, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, Szymanowski, and the sonatas of Alun Hoddinott.

Jones has also recorded several Spanish piano masters. Volume 2 of his series received the 2000 Classical Indie Award from the Association for Independent Music. The soundtrack of the 1992 film Howards End features Jones performing Percy Aldridge Grainger's "Bridal Lullaby" and "Mock Morris."

Jones' first in a series of CDs featuring Richard Rodney Bennett's piano music has been released on the Metronome label. His recent Nimbus releases include Gershwin transcriptions by Earl Wild; major piano works by Hans Gal; and the complete piano works of Guastavino. Jones is currently recording Czerny's sonatas.
