CANDICE ROBERTSON WRITES: "This is Annabelle Robertson with one of her Pa Howard's roosters. She kept complaining that he was 'biting' her. Anyone who has ever met Annabelle knows that she and mischief go hand-in-hand, and I'm sure the rooster was just in his actions." ColumbiaMagazine.com Group at Flickr

Erin Johnson of Russellville, KY; Sarah Smith of Brandenburg, KY, and Carmen Drake of Hodgenville, KY. Epicurean Kentuckian: Fat Tire Amber Ale

FAT TIRE AMBER ALE. This ale, with its bready aroma, may transport one back to Louisville, KY in the 1950s, when bakery like aromas wafted out of the old Fehr's, Falls City, and Oertel's breweries.

Wildflowers of KY: Violets are back, March 27, 2009

2009-03-28 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen.
Violets add color to better country yards where no herbicides are used and, for many, and where dandelions, tick grass, bluegrass, and myrtle intertwingle, are part of a volunteer edible garden. The University of Kentucky lists the plant in it's list of Edible Plants by Robert Anderson, revised March 2009 , giving the plant this entry: "Violet. Viola odorata Purple to white. Sweet PerennialGood candied." Another pamphlet says the flowers make good garnishes in salads. Many people find nasturtiums, marigolds, and dandelions the most easily grown edible flowers, though, Sandra Bastin, writes in another pamphlet isssued by the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Edible Flowers, but the pamphlet comes with a warning saying, Your best bet is to use flowers which re commercially grown especially for eating.

Cat and Mouse, by Kristi Keene

2009-03-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Kristi Keene.
SO MANY HAVE ASKED WHAT THESE ARE. The answer has arrived from cyberspace, courtesy a most valued reader and contributed. "They are Netsukes," writes Frank Dickerson, Pellytonian now part of the great Adair County Diaspora. He now lives somewhere in California. He continues, "Fine examples of Japanese Netsuke carvings. Very collectible for those with an appetite for such artifacts." The information was received at 9:22amCT, March 29, 2009. Our thanks to Mr. Dickerson At 11:21, Sunday, March 29, 2009, Kristy Keene wrote to clarify the cutline more: "This particular cat and mouse set actually are not made from ivory, but from a ceramic material. The head of the cat and mouse can be removed to reveal a little secret bowl inside. I use them to put my rings in when I am washing the dishes. They are about two inches tall and made in the UK. I saw these on my step-mother's desk at work and fell in love with them. Unfortunately, she doesn't remember where she bought them." So the objects are not exactly netsukes, but are probably based on the whimsical Japanese carvings.
