Valerie Cooper of Jamestown in Russell County, who is currently enrolled in first-year studies of the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program, has received the 2009 James H. Anderson Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding SCC PTA first-year student. The award is named in honor of past SCC PTA Program Director James H. Anderson.

"This is an especially meaningful award," stated Dr. Steve Hammons, who serves as the program's Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education. "The recipient is deemed by his or her peers to be the student who will make the most significant impact upon the lives of their patients and on the future of the physical therapy profession. Valarie is an exceptionally strong student and I feel that she will make a lasting impact upon the profession."

Cooper is active in a number of community service activities. She volunteered her time and energy to activities including the Shriners Hospital for Children's No Limits Sports Clinic, the Kentucky Special Olympics, and the Marquette Challenge, a fundraiser for physical therapy research. She assisted with collecting donations for the Needy Kids Christmas celebration and has been featured prominently in SCC marketing and promotional materials. She currently serves as Vice-President of her class and President of the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization and serves on the SCC PTA Program's Advisory Board. A member of both the Kentucky and American Physical Therapy Associations, Cooper serves as a student liaison and was recently published in the APTA national student newsletter, the Pulse.

The past three winners of the James H. Anderson Award went on to receive national recognition from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Heather Tuel of Somerset received the award in 2006 and was later named the 2007 APTA National PTA Student of the Year. Isaac Mills of Corbin, the 2007 winner and was named the 2008 APTA National Orthopaedic Student of the Year. 2008 winner Rod Edwards of Somerset was named the 2009 APTA National PTA Student of the Year.

Cooper is the daughter of Don and Pam Cooper and has two brothers, Ryan and Thomas. She will be recognized at the SCC PTA Program's annual Open House and Student Recognition Event on April 2 and at SCC's Honors Night Program on April 24 in London. She is expected to graduate with an Associates of Applied Science Degree from the Physical Therapist Assistant Program in May, 2010.
