COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College will be a hotbed of research and intellectual discovery this weekend as the college hosts the 16th-annual Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference.

Undergraduate students from 11 Southern Appalachian colleges and universities will present the findings of their research on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Lindsey Wilson. All presentations are free and open to the public.

"This conference will showcase some of the best and brightest undergraduate college students from throughout Southern Appalachian," said Lindsey Wilson Vice President of Academic Affairs Bettie Starr. "We are pleased to have these emerging young scholars on our campus and to visit Columbia-Adair County for the weekend."

Subjects to be explored at the two-day conference include shyness; a feminist interpretation of former first lady Abigail Adams; drug abuse; how watching television affects grades; and a scientific study of the water in Lake Cumberland.

In addition to Lindsey Wilson, students from the following colleges will present undergraduate research at this weekend's conference: Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, Brevard (NC) College, Bryan (TN) College, Carson-Newman (TN) College, Ferrum (VA) College, King (TN) College, Lee (TN) University, Lincoln Memorial (TN) University, Milligan (TN) College and Tennessee Wesleyan College.

From Lindsey Wilson, a total of 21 students will present research findings on nine projects. The research Lindsey Wilson students conducted included both individual and collaborative work.

And it's no accident that Lindsey Wilson has the most students presenting at the conference, Starr said.

"Giving students an opportunity to partner with faculty on a research project is one of the characteristics that makes Lindsey Wilson unique," Starr said. "Many schools allow undergraduates to engage in research with faculty, but they limit which students get the opportunity. At Lindsey Wilson, we want all of our undergraduate students to experience an opportunity to engage in undergraduate research."

The Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference encourages undergraduate students from colleges and universities in Southern Appalachia to conduct research projects and present their findings in a high-quality, low-pressure forum. Students will display research powers or present research orally with PowerPoint or other visual aids in interdisciplinary sessions. Each presentation will be about 15 minutes long with five minutes allowed for questions.

The Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference will open at 1:00pmCT on Friday, March 27, 2009, with a keynote address by John Mateja, professor of physics and director of undergraduate research at Murray State (KY) University. Events will take place in Fugitte Science Center, Hodge Center for Discipleship, and Cranmer Dining Center, all close together on Helen Flatt Drive, immediately east of Begley Chapel, on the Campus of Lindsey Wilson College. After Friday afternoon's presentations, representatives from several regional graduate schools will speak at that evening's dinner in Cranmer Dining Center.
