Catherine Wilson Center event to raise awareness of violence Reading of "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer" March 31, 2009 at LWC By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs The Lindsey Wilson College Catherine Wilson Center hopes a March 31 event will raise awareness about violence against women, both locally and around the world. The Catherine Wilson Center will present a reading of "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer" at 6:00pmCT on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in V.P. Henry Auditorium. There is a $5 admission to the event, which will benefit the V-Day organization, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. "Violence is happening everywhere, and if we can stop it one person at a time, that is worth it," said Kristina Sult, co-director of the Catherine Wilson Center. During "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer," members of the Lindsey Wilson and Columbia-Adair County communities will read selections of a work compiled by American playwright Eve Ensler. The work include pieces about victims of violence against women, both in the United States and around the world. Sult cited a 2004 study by the University of Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center that found that 1 in 10 women in Kentucky will be victims of violence during their lifetimes. "Violence is happening everywhere, and if we can stop it one person at a time and stop violence, that is worth it," Sult said. Sult said that education and "teaching people to make good choices" are two keys in reducing violence against women. Sult said she hopes V-Day will also raise awareness about the Democratic Republic of Congo, where tens of thousands of women in that African nation are raped and murdered every year. "Every person is faced with violence in their life at some point, and we have to stand up against it," Sult said. "This is our way of bringing awareness to Lindsey Wilson and Kentucky." The Catherine Wilson Center will present "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer" at 6:00pmCT on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in V.P. Henry Auditorium, 201 Lindsey Wilson ST, Columbia, KY. There is a $5 admission to the event, which will benefit the V-Day organization. This story was posted on 2009-03-25 13:17:11
