Special ColumbiaMagazine.com report

The availability of a building for firefighters to use as a training facility is a rare gift.

To have 16 doors to practice forcible entry, a wall to collapse for trapped victims, and a two story building to use a ladder truck to ascend and cut ventilation holes in a roof was a tremendous opportunity.

But Saturday, March 21, 2009, the opportunity to use such a builiding became a reality, as 37 firefighters representing 11 different fire departments, assembled in Columbia, KY to spend eight hours of their day to be able to enhance various skills and become better firefighters. The Adair County Fire Department, including Columbia-Adair County Firefighters, Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department, and Breeding Fire Departments all took part in the event.

The Columbia-Adair County Fire Department acted as host and State Fire/Rescue Training Area 14 provided the Instructors.

Charles W. Shaw, coordinator for the State Fire Rescue Training, Campbellsville, KY, was on hand to coordinate instruction. Charles Sparks, Columbia, KY, Assistant State Fire Marshal, was also on the scene.

Firefighters came from surrounding counties were Edmonton/Metcalfe County, Campbellsville/Taylor County, Burkesville, Albany, Temple Hill in Barren County, Glasgow City, Pine Knot in McCreary County, and Central Hardin Fire District in Hardin County, KY.The event took place at the old Maupin Apartments, on Bryant Street off Miller Avenue in Coumbia, where a unique opportunity for the training was presented prior to the the demolition of the building, which is now underway.

The building is being demolished in a musical chairs movement of departments at the college, as the new Marching Band Department, under the direction of TIm Allen, will take over what is now the Maintenance Depatrment, and Mike Newton's Maintenance Department gets new quarters on the site where the Maupin Apartments are coming down.

SDL's Design team has already begun work on the design of the new maintenance building, with a representative on site Monday taking photos to use in the design process.

Pyles Excavating, Inc., also allowed the firefighters to be able to train in a building for physical hands on exercises to be a full day of an outside classroom. The Pyles Company will be demolishing the building on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, after Tommy Grider and others remove some of the siding, doors, and windows from the property, which was underway Monday, March 23, 2009.The mission to ensure that quality training was conducted and to organize the outside evolutions.

A special thanks from the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department to The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department for the use of a pumper and tanker to assist in the day.

Wayne Ray and IGA provided lunch for all the firefighters and instructors to keep everyone from having to leave the site.

Also thanks to Adair Search and Rescue Team (ASAR) for the use of their new truck which has a supply of breathing air to fill the self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in which firefighters wore on their back in the smoke filled room.

The day was a complete success and was a very worthwhile event.
