Chilly first day of Spring did not feel like it, but look at the color

2009-03-21 - Jones-Wright Addition, District 2, Adair Co., Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
"This was the view on Appen Ave. today," Shamarie Claiborne writes of Friday in the Jones-Wright Addition. " It did not feel like the first day of spring but it did look like it!" The forsythia in the foreground is the national flower of the Jones-Wright neighborhood, the wonderful Columbia neighborhood originally built for the engineers and managers of the companies building Wolf Creek Dam in the 1940's, and continues to be, in the words of resident Edwin Taylor, "Columbia's best kept secret." For some reason, during the yellow season, the world's brightest forsythia are here, maybe as a memorial to the late Columbia Councillor Louise Hutchison, whose forsythia hedge was pure glory, every spring.

Banner over Pinewood 18th hole gallantly streaming

2009-03-21 - Pinewood Golf Course, 275 Country Club RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Mike Hamlett. A BEAUTIFUL, AND SOMEWHAT EMOTIONAL SIGHT for Pinewood Golf Course members is the scene at sunset with the the banner atop the 18th hole flagstick still waving proudly. Golfers have been through an roller coaster of ups and downs about the course's future, which was never brighter than it is today in operation under the management and ownership of Lindsey Wilson College.

Scenic Kentucky: Hodgenville has roundabout like Columbia, KY

2009-03-22 - Hodgenville, Larue County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
HODGENVILLE, KY, has always had a proper square, like Columbia, Adair County, KY, and Greenfiield, Adair County, Iowa, with incoming streets dividing the shopping strips in the center. Now Hodgenville has a proper roundabout, like Columbia, Adair County, KY, only they have Abraham Lincoln's statue in the center where Columbia, KY has the Old Courthouse. This view is looking north on Lincoln Boulevard from N. High Street. Always one of America's most delightful small towns, a makeover for the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration has rendered the county seat of Larue County, KY a stunningly attractive American destination city. Among new improvements coming, too, near the water tower in the center of the photo, is a new campus for Campbellsville University. Traffic flows even more smoothly with the roundabout, drawing attention to the need to preserve the Old Adair County Courthouse as the soul-center of Columbia, KY. One hoped for prospect is for the property to be managed by Lindsey Wilson College after the Sheriff and County Attorney move to the Courthouse Annex at 424 Public Square, Columbia, and the courts and Circuit Court Clerk's office move to the new Adair Justice Center later this year. -ED WAGGENER
