Great Backyard Bird Count: The Count is Over. Columbia #1 in KY!

Wild Turkeys, up close, in Petty's Fork Creek bottom, by the great wildlife photographer, Old Coddger. The rafter of turkeys congregating along the south side of Columbia Western Bypass between KY 61 North and KY 61 South sometimes nears 50 birds. Old Coddger snuck up close and got this one.
Columbia Finished #1 in Kentucky with 204 checklists to Lexington's 130, Louisville 83; Glasgow 34, and Frankfort 33. Columbia tied with Lexington for reporting the most species, 74. Therefore ColumbiaMagazine.com pronounces Adair County the Birdwatching Capital of Kentucky, and very close to being named the Bluebird Capital of the United States, thanks to the work of Day & Day Feed, the anonymous Michael of Absher, there's no such place as Egypt Bluebird, and the wonderful photography of Kay Haupt. One can never have too many Bluebirds!

(ADV) Cultural & Culinary forces collide at Ol' Joes B&B Que

2009-03-18 - 824 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ol Joes B&B QUE Public Relations Dept.. FEEDING HUNGRY MOUTHS and FEEDING HUNGRY MINDS: Ol' Joe Barbee is where the world of history and culture and barbecue culinary expertise collide. America's best barbecue? Of course. But we also have food for the mind, with the great history of Adair County in word and picture tastefully hung in a gallery of photos we're hoping will get the attention of Southern Living, Dave Shuffett, or the late Charles Kuralt. Above, left Joe Lynn Barbee in the midst of the great massing hanging on March 6, 2009. Above right A photo of the honor guard accompanying the body of World War II hero Alfred Harper, with from left, Robert Parson, Bill Walker, Jack Williams, W.J. Cundiff, and J.T. Tupman, as the procession entered the Public Square from Campbellsville Street. A much larger version hangs on the East Wall of the VFW Building, Fairgrounds and Young Streets, Columbia, KY. Lower left A picture from long ago Lindsey Wilson College Administration Building in 1903, scarcely changed today as the L.R. MacDonald Building on the A.P White campus, except for the wonderful Brass Rail Symbol installed in the tenure of Dr. John Begley. The building was erected by George Fletcher, from a design by architect Val Collins. Lower right Maybe Ol' Joe's Favorite picture. Some great faces from Knifley, KY. From left, Owen Arnold, Robert Quinn, Nolan Jones, Lon Chelf, Chester Chelf, and Steve Knifley. Knifley was the town's blacksmith. There are so many more fascinating art pieces to see, including some Katie Kerr landscapes (for sale) at Ol' Joes B&B QUE, 824 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY. Come visit. We're open this weekend, Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21, 2009. MENU

At Roads update: CJE, BAM and Sammy Baker

2009-03-18 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
51st DISTRICT KENTUCKY STATE REPRESENTATIVE BAM CARNEY, center, held press conference in the Adair Annex Building at the office of Adair County CJE ANN Melton, left. With them is Sammy Baker, Magistrate in District 3, who received good news on the funding prospects for the KY 55 bridge over Glens Fork Creek and for straightening the path of Dug (sometimes called Insurance Hill) on KY 704 above Burns Creek. The two projects were among several getting at least some funding in the current budget. "I wouldn't be at all surprised to the KY 55 bridge built in this biennium," Rep. Carney said. The conference was held at 3:00pmCT, Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Also at the conference, and just out of the picture, was Sixth District Magistrate Joe Rogers.

Heartland Parkway: Reason for concern for Dr. Downey

2009-03-18 - Adair County High Schoool, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The WAY ONE OF THE PROPOSED HEARTLAND PARKWAY ROUTES cuts through Dr. Max Downey's farmstead, located just across the Adair County line in Taylor County was a matter of grave concern. One alternatives makes something of a swoop away from the path of today's KY 55 toward Green River Lake and slices his farm in two. "How am I going to get hay to horses across a four lane divided highway?" Dr. Downey asked. The median, between the north and south bound lanes is generally 40 feet, but will be squez down in some places, the gathering last night, Tuesday, March 17, 2009, was told. Still, the limited access road will only wholes punched in the fence no closer than 1,200 feet apart. The road is apt to be built as early as 2017. It was a great concern for Dr. Downey.

Heartland Pkwy Meeting: Rufus Hansford

2009-03-18 - Adair County High School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
TAYLOR COUNTY AUCTIONEER and REAL ESTATE BROKER RUFUS HANSFORD scrutinizes the alternate routes for Heartland Parkway as it woud go between the Homeplace on Green River, on the West side of the road, and property he owns on the East, as well as that of his neighbor commercial property owners, Columbians Joe Lynn Barbee and Chris Cole, all located on New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY. The photo was taken at the "KY 55 Heartland Parkway Public Meeting #2/Stage 1: Conceptual Alternatives" held from 6-8:00pmCT, Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the Adair County High School. A meeting with the same title will be held March 24, 2009, from 6-8:00pmET, at Taylor County High School, Campbellsville, KY.

Heartland Parkway meeting #2: David Louis Butler

2009-03-18 - Adair County High School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
DAVID LOUIS BUTLER, owner of Holmes Bend Resort/Marina, Holmes Bend Road, Columbia, KY, was rather pleased with the alternative routes the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet presented last night at Adair County High School. Butler's historic family run on Knifley Road/KY 55 is not only out of range of the road, cross hatching on the map designated it a historic landmark, making it very low priority of new road projects.

Heartland Parkway meeting #2: Where it hurts

2009-03-18 - Columbia, KY . The OVERLAY SHOWING A NEARLY COMMON ROUTEfor all the options for the proposed four-lane Heartland Parkway/KY 55 suggest major grief in the passage between Betty's OK Country Cooking on the West Side of the Road and Trinity United Methodist Church on the East. The Wm. Davenport Fellowship Hall is the large white-roofed building in the center of the photo at right, and the sanctuary of Trinity is just to the right. The thinner green lines show the right of way fence, which takes in most of Betty's and scrapes right up against Trinity. Lower left Rich Ollestad of Betty's OK Country Cooking, in lime shirt, couldn't believe that the state would consider knocking out a major South Central Kentucky institution which employs 20 people, while right, Bro.Bill Davenport is being cheer by an old Gradyville, KY home-day chat with Paul Hayes, editor of the Adair Progressand favorite son of Gradyville. Bro. Davenport has historic property in Gradyville. Still, later he said there was little to cheer in the patch the road takes by the church with the hall which bears his name, or, on north out the road, at his home, which loses its front yard. Heartland Parkway planners at the Tuesday, March 17, 2009 meeting projected funding might allow construction of the parkway by 2017, a mere 8 years away.
