Scenic Green Co., KY: JTC Quilt Barn Trail, Ebenezer community

2009-03-08 - Ebenezer Community, Green Co., KY - Photo by Judy Corbin.
"OLD MAID'S PUZZLE" QUILT: This is one of the quilts on the Jane Todd Quilt Trail in Green County. The pattern is called the "Old Maid's Puzzle." The barn, owned by Janie Skillern, is located off KY 61 in the Ebenezer community of southern Green County. Gourd houses are waiting for the birds to come. Gourd bird houses were erected Saturday, March 7, 2009, in time for summer arrivals. The picturesque Ebenezer Community is worth a Sunday afternoon day trip. From Columbia, take the Greensburg Road/KY 61 north about 11 miles, then a right on KY 585, Ebenezer Road. A north turn in downtown Ebenezer takes one on a scenic backroad to Greensburg.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Bird Road in daffodil time

2009-03-08 - Bird Road, District 4, Adair County, KY - Photo by Pen.
DAFFODILS ARE IN BLOOM all along the pristine Bird Road right of way east of Sparksville, KY. The beckoning road ahead leads to the legendary community of Dirigo, KY, the one-time boom town now owned by Harold Calvin Allinson, popularly known as "Cherokee." Intensely cared for pastures filled with sleek beef cattle, immaculately maintained farmsteads and long views over the hilltops below make Bird Road one of the most beautiful places in America, in all seasons, but especially now, in spring. Scenic Adair Co., KY: Rock Lick Creek on way to Cumberland River

2009-03-08 - District 3, Adair CO., KY - Photo by Pen.
ROCK LICK CREEK meanders through the Jay Wheeler farm in Southern Adair County, west of Chance, East of Dirigo and Sparksville, on its way to Harrods Fork Creek which flows into Crocus Creek, to make the Cumberland River above Burkesville, KY. The bed of Rock Lick is mostly as smooth as a billiard table, just right for dozens of Wheeler and Loy grandchildren to wade. The road veering left, above, climbs the steep hill behind the homeplace to Kentucky 1952 at Emory Chapel.

Smiley School House: Recalling a special privilege

2009-03-08 - Sulphur Creek Road, District One, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
ADAIR COUNTY EDUCATOR DON NEAT, one of the many distinguished graduates of Smiley School, at the pump by the front door of the school. Neat says that getting to draw water was one of the special privileges the boys vied for when he attended school there in the late 1950s. The school house still stands on Sulphur Creek Road, on the south side of KY 206 at Ella/Fairview/Smiley/Goodin's Crossroads. The school had eight grades, two rooms, and two teachers. It ceased being a school when Smiley was consolidated into Shepherd School. Kentucky 15th District State Senator Vernie McGaha is an alumnus.

Today were the first blooms!" The picture for the record book, was taken Saturday, March 7, which for the record, was a Perfect Day. Flickr

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Turtle Rock on Russell Creek

2009-03-08 - Pelham Branch Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Pen.
THIS UNUSUAL ROCK on the cliff overlooking Russell Creek south of the Pelham Branch Road Bridge, can remind one of a tall turtle. Beneath its "font feet" there is a cavity large enough for a small human or large animal to find shelter.

Scenic Adair Co, KY: The messages in the tree

2009-03-08 - Rocky Hill Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Pen.
IT'S A VERITABLE CATALPA RORSCHACH TEST, with a myriad of figures and faces, leaving so much to the imagination, though anyone can find the image of the old lady with the long nose and her hair in a bun a little to the right of center. There's at least one monkey face, a lion king, and Elmo. We're finding it a stretch to see a portrait of a 12 year old Blackie Nixon in it, but it may be there. Whether one sees the characters or not, it is hard to imagaine a more gnarly tree trunk on the planet, or one with so much character.
