Gardener's Without Borders: Across county line to rescue garden Adair County Garden Club helps Taylor colleague clean up ice storm debris By Barbara Armitage Members of the Adair County Garden Club crossed the Taylor county line to participate in their first garden rescue today. While Adair County was lucky enough to escape the recent ice storms with only minimal damage folks just north of Campbellsville were not so lucky. The old timber forests there look more like a bombed out set from an old war movie. State and county road crews are still out clearing trees from roadways and piles of fresh cut wood are stacked everywhere. Dolly Shelby, a member of the Taylor County Garden Club was hit hard by the storm. A true gardener Dollie weathered days without electricity in her cold house but kept her greenhouse going by using a wood stove. When the ice and snow melted she faced an even bigger challenge - finding her beloved gardens under the mass of broken tree branches. When the Adair County Garden Club heard of her dilemma they decided to lend a hand. Kathy Hunt, Vonnie Kolbenschlag, Maury Lewis, Johnie Biggs and Barbara Armitage spent the day working along side Dolly's neighbors and friends removing a mountain of tree branches from her yard. "We weren't able to do anything about the acres of forest land but the area around the house is clear" said Barbara Armitage. Even with all this damage nature moves on. As we removed pile of branches we found tiny Purple Crocus blooming as if nothing had ever happened. If you would like to participate in Adair County Garden Club activities please call Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 for more information. This story was posted on 2009-03-07 02:47:28
