Kentucky's top horticulturist coming here for grafting class The Adair County Garden Club presents hands on a class with Dr. Terry Jones March 19, 2009 By Barbara Armitage Dr. Terry Jones, University of Kentucky Extension Horticulturist will present a free fruit tree grafting and pruning class on Thursday March 19, 2009, at 1:00pmCT at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. In this "hands on" class you will have the opportunity to graft an apple tree. Apple root stock will be available for $1.25 for the first 50 students. Scion wood (to be grafted on to wood stock) will be provided or you may bring your own scion wood from an apple tree of your choice. Dr. Jones will also demonstrate the proper pruning techniques for fruit trees and grape vines. Students should bring a very sharp thin bladed knife or grafting knife to the class. Box cutters or Eexacta knives may not be used. Instructions for cutting your own scion wood: Cut your scion wood as soon as possible. From any apple tree locate a new growth branch - usually a branch growing straight up and cut off 18-24 inches. It must have at least 3 to 4 buds. Wrap each limb in a damp not wet paper towel and store in the refrigerator until the class. Remove any apples you may have in the refrigerator as they will encourage the buds to open. Advance registration is not necessary however the class is limited to 50 students. Tuition is free. This free class is brought to our community through the efforts of the Adair County Garden Club. For information on upcoming classes or to join the Adair County Garden Club contact Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979. This story was posted on 2009-03-01 17:27:08
