Letter: Thinks higher taxes means less use not absolutely true

Response to: "Higher tax means less smoking, better health, writer says:

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Let me first say that I feel sorry for anyone who has lost a loved one due to tobacco use or for any reason. However since the Surgeon General made it mandatory to put warning labels on tobacco products as well as an age limit on buyers, everyone knows using tobacco could be very harmful. I am not a lobbyist for people to use tobacco. I have two young children and I hope that they will not use tobacco.

To say that higher taxes mean less smoking is not absolutely true. With an estimated 30% of cigarettes sold in Kentucky coming from out of state buyers and Kentucky having the 4th lowest tax in the nation, I think you can see the direct link. Also internet sales of cigarettes is estimated to be in the billions of dollars. So to me higher taxes may not be the answer people are looking for to get people to stop using tobacco and definitely not the answer for new revenue.

Oh, and by the way--NBC has a reality show on primetime television full of people who eat candy "once in a while". It is called the "Biggest Loser."
