Tony Harvey spots other identifying features of finches Getting Ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count Starting Friday, February 13 and running through Monday, February 16, 2009 About: Finches at Rustic Feeder To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I would point out one feature of the bird in the photo previously identified as a Purple Finch. The distinct reddish or maroon color that runs along the sides, flank and down to the vent feathers, are useful in identifying a Purple Finch; as well, the rump and upper tail coverts are dark brown on the Purple Finch, whereas on the House Finch the rump is a reddish color and the upper tail coverts are a mixed brownish color. I hope this helps others identify the different finches, fascinating birds whatever one calls them, but I really enjoy orinthology more when I have correctly identified species, sub-species, and varieties. I verified this, to my own satisfaction, using, Audubon's, Sibley's, and What Bird.com websites. On first glance one would think the bird is a House Finch, but there are several other distinct features to look for when identifying birds. s/Tony Harvey This story was posted on 2009-02-05 07:39:43
