Letter: Questions aim of cigarette tax increase

Response to Governor Steven L. Beshear's 2009 State of the State Message

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

After reading Gov. Beshears state of state message I'm a little confused about the tax increase proposed on tobacco... Are we raising the taxes for Health concerns or for Revenue, if we are truly worried about health concerns. Obesity is a huge problem among Kentuckians, why not put an additional state tax on soft drinks, candies and sweet cereals...etc? Why is there no mention of an alcohol tax?

Raising the cigarette tax may sound like a good idea to some or even most, but in my humble opinion, it is not the answer to our States Revenue problem.

I tend to think of it like standing in a bucket and trying to lift yourself up by the handle, a decent idea, but not going to happen.

s/Scotty Carter
