Says Wish List Projects worthy, but he opposes Stimulus bill

Response to: Stimulus package Wish List County road bridge projects

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

While I agree that all of these requests are worthy projects that need to be completed in Adair County, the Stimulus Bill is absolutely the wrong place to seek funding for them.

This bill offers very little stimulus for the economy, but a lot of opportunity for politicians to gain ground with constituents by completing road and building projects. It should be dubbed the Porkulus Bill since it is full of nothing but pet projects that these politicians have been promising for the last 40+ years. Simply put, the purpose of this legislation is to pump money into the economy so businesses arent strained and can continue to employee people. This bill does very little of that.

Funding for these types of projects should be part of regular budget requests, not part of legislation that is intended to quickly stimulate the economy. While these projects might offer a short lived jolt to the current situation, they do absolutely nothing for the long term in terms of employment.

Also, keep in mind that it often takes months of planning to start projects such as these. This bill should be made up of tax cuts for businesses and individuals and possibly tax rebates for individuals that actually pay taxes, not pork projects. The capital gains tax should be temporarily suspended along with other business friendly maneuvers so we can create jobs. If people dont have jobs, there is no economy.

If you all feel the need to contact your Senators and Representatives about this bill, it should be to tell them to leave it alone and stay as far away from it as they can get, not to tell them to support it.

Thanks,
Stephen Caldwell
