Stimulus package Wish List: County road & bridge projects

Adair County Leaders are putting together a list of shovel ready projects for consideration when the Fiscal Stimulus Package makes its way through Congress. Adair County CJE Ann Melton, Columbia Mayor Pat Bell, and Vice President Dean Adams of Lindsey Wilson College have coordinated a consolidated booklet of project descriptions for the Fiscal Stimulus Proposals which are are forwarding to state legislative contacts and members of the Kentucky Congressional Delegation. Independent requests are being made by the Adair County School Board and by the Adair County Water District and Adair County Water Plant

By Ed Waggener

A major part of Adair County Fiscal Court's Stimulus Package proposed "Shovel Ready" projects includes roads and bridges, CJE Ann Melton says.

The South 55 Bridge is the top priority for funding among County Road Projects.

The Stimulus Project proposal request calls this "the most dangerous bridge in Adair County," and states, "The existing structure is a 3-span concrete beam/deck bridge with a total span aroun 97' and crosses over Glensfork Creek. Anyone would agree this is the most dangerous bridge located in Adair County. Dump Truck use this bridge daily hauling asphalt and limestone to all locations in Adair County as well as several surrounding counties.

"There have been numerous occasions when trucks passed on this bridge when windows have been knocked off as well as other accidents," the project description states."

County officials say the estimated cost of the replacement bridge, ready to go except for funding, is $2,110,000.

Other road projects:

  • Stimulus Package need: Replace most dangerous bridge

2009-02-04 - KY 55 South over Glens Fork Creek, at Zion, Third District, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The TOP PRIORITY bridge replacement need, Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton believes, is this narrow span over Glens Fork Creek on KY 55, in the Zion Community, five miles south of Coulumbia, KY. Huge Adair County Road Department dump trucks and rock and blacktop trucks from the Gaddie-Shamrock Plant, just a few hundred yards south of this location, pass over the bridge several times a day. The replacement project is as shovel ready as they get. It just needs funding. Beshear Administration Contact Richard Lee Walker has assured Third District Magistrate Sammie Baker that the project is the top Adair County project for the state administration, too.
