Birds of Kentucky: Finches at Rustic Feeder

2009-02-04 - Near Breeding, KY - Photo by Kay Haupt.
Kay Haupt sent this beautiful backyard scene on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at her home near Breeding, KY. Pen writes: "The yellowish ones are Goldfinches, and the red one is also a finch, probably a Purple Finch, although ID on those can be tricky. for more, see birdsource.org." And Jeanne Marshburn adds, "What a marvelous picture... My thoughts are that the highest bird is a winter plumaged Goldfinch. The black wings are the key field mark. The perched bird with the red coloring is a House Finch, not a Purple Finch. Purple Finches look like they were dipped in raspberry sauce. Orange or red coloring indicates a House Finch. There is another Goldfinch peeking around the backside of the feeder. The 2 brown birds with stripped backs showing towards the camera are probably sparrows. Great looking rustic cabin feeder!"
