Columbia United Methodist Churchs fellowship hall was filled with cheers and a few tears Saturday afternoon, January 24, 2009, as Cub Scout Pack 888 and their families gathered for the Scouts annual Pinewood Derby.

Fourteen hopefuls launched the small but impressive model race cars they built themselves down the long track towards victory or defeat in the double elimination contest. But even those who did not take home the trophies showed great skill and received much applause from the crowd of spectators that numbered 50 or so.

Brettley Young was the first place winner of the derby when his green racer edged out Anthony Richards car in the final heat. The third place trophy was taken home by David Brown. Each of the Cubs was awarded a ribbon for participating.

The Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was born 56 years ago in California when a Cub Scout father decided to create an activity he could do with his son. The cars are carved from soft pine wood and while fathers are urged to give advice and close supervision, the boys have to do the construction. The rules are strict and the judges examine each car before the race.

The Pack 888 Cub Scouts meet at Columbia United Methodist, 202 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY, every Monday at six under the leadership of Cubmaster Shane Patterson and Assistant Cubmasters Phillip Richard and David Bava. Pack 888 has grown from less than ten boys last year to a roster of 25 this year. The boys and their parents enjoy a variety of activities all aimed at developing leaders and good citizens.

In addition to the Pinewood Derby and their regular meetings where they work on various skills, the boys have had cookouts, indoor overnights complete with tents and field trips. This year they plan to do an outdoor camp out when the weather warms up.

Pack 888 is open to all boys who are currently in first through fifth grades. When they reach 11 years old they become eligible to join one of the areas Boy Scout troops.

Parents interested in finding out more about the Cub Scouts can visit one of the Monday meetings or call Cubmaster Shane Patterson at (270) 572-3003 or Assistant Cubmaster David Bava at (270) 634-2893.

JUDGES ERIC CLEMENTS and TAMMY HARDEN watch closely as the expressions on cubs Sammy Sneed, left, and Eric Stroud pretty well show who won the heat. Also keeping a close eye on the race are Clements' daughter, Emilegh, 5, and Sammy's brother, Dominic, 2.
