Letter: Thank police for the job they do

About: " Law officers conduct should be like preachers"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Police officers are held to a higher standard than citizens. They are under constant scrutiny from the public. These officers are human just as you and I. Should officers be speeding just because they can? No, they shouldn't. Some calls do not necessitate lights and sirens; however, you still want the police officer to get to your call asap.

As a dispatcher, I receive complaints because the officers do not arrive at the speed of lightning to every minor complaint called in.

No matter what the men and women of law enforcement do, someone is going to complain. They cannot please everyone, and most days I doubt they please anyone.

My point was that as opposed to worrying about whether or not officers are driving a few miles over the speed limit, you should be focused on the real issues in our community.

I am much more concerned about the drug issues, child abuse issues, thefts, burglaries, etc than I am whether or not the police officer is going 40 mph in a 35 mph!

I guarantee if you call for assistance for any reason, you will certainly not mind then if they are speeding to get to you. Instead of criticizing them, try thanking them for the job they do!

s/Amy Pike
