Wayne Armitage and his hybrid Ford Escape

2009-01-25 - Bull Run Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage.
HE'S GONE GREEN: Early adopter Wayne Armitage of Tucker's Station above Bull Run Road, is the trailblazing owner of a new Ford Escape hybrid car. He joins a very few other Adair County hybrid owners and may be the first to own the Ford brand. Others zipping by gas stations with half-electric, half internal combustion engines have favored Toyota's Prius. Armitage expects the ratios to change rapidly. And his wife Barbara Armitage has a dream of one day, in the not too distant future, of owning an all-electric car recharged, entirely, by solar power generation at Tucker's Station. Former Ford employee Armitage had to go to Somerset to find an Escape available, but he hopes that, in the future, inventories of vehicles in Columbia will offer the cars. "We love it," he said after the first few days ownership. Some of the hybrid's owners are using hypermiling techniques to achieve over 40 mpg in the car.A Today, January 25, 2009, Feature photo

Epicurean Kentuckian: A little spice

2009-01-25 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Kristy Keene.
ADDING KICK TO STEAKS: "This Spice is McCormick's Salt Free Steak Seasoning. It is a mixture of Spices which include garlic, onion, red and green bell peppers, mustard seed, and chili peppers. It adds a little kick to steaks," writes Kristy Keene. "I got the idea to photograph the seasoning after my five year old son, Trent, knocked down some of my spices and they spilled on the floor. I found the variety of the particular seasoning interesting."
