Letter: Remembers the day Columbia was 33 degrees F. below It was unforgettable day in Richmond: Dorm mother at Eastern State College (now EKU) gave girls permission to wear pants that day. Certain that it was 1963 About: Memories of when Columbia was the coldest place in America Billy Joe Fudge, c/o ColumbiaMagazine.com: It was in January of 1963 that Columbia was the coldest place in the nation. I was living in the dorm at Eastern State College (now EKU), and the dorm mother came around to announce it was so cold the girls could wear pants to class. That was an exciting announcement, and I don't think anyone wore a skirt that day. This brings back old memories for me. Dress codes were strictly enforced in those days. I'm certain that it was 1963. s/Marsha Walker This story was posted on 2009-01-17 22:25:48
