Jones estate endows LWC scholarship Green Co., KY residents

LWC receives $200,000 from Estate of Walter Minton Jones, a Greensburg native and former Hart Co. Cooperative Extension agent

COLUMBIA, KY - The kindness of a former Cooperative Extension agent will help Lindsey Wilson College students earn a college education.

Lindsey Wilson has received more than $200,000 from the estate of the late Walter Minton Jones to establish a need-based scholarship for a Green County resident to attend Lindsey Wilson.

Jones never attended Lindsey Wilson

Jones, who was born in 1927 in Greensburg, KY, did not attend Lindsey Wilson. But his father, the late Willie Jones who was a farmer and auctioneer, was a trustee at the college in the 1930s and '40s.

Dr. Luckey says Jones never forgot his roots

"This act of kindness will have an impact on so many future Lindsey Wilson students from Southcentral Kentucky," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "Because Mr. Jones never forgot his roots or where he came from, deserving area students will be able to earn a college degree from Lindsey Wilson."

Jones died in 2003, on his birthday

Jones died on his birthday, December 30, 2003, at the age of 76. His will first provided first for the needs of his wife, the late Lois Goodman Jones, who died in May 2008. After her death, the proceeds from his estate were divided between Lindsey Wilson and the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Home in Versailles. The Jones did not have any children.

Jones spent most of his career as the agriculture Extension agent for Hart County. His wife taught school in Munfordville, KY. At the time of his death, Jones attended Longview United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, KY.

"He was a very nice man who was very committed to the children of the area, so I guess that is why he decided to set up the scholarship," said Linda W. Childress, Hart County Extension Office support staff member who worked with Jones.

Sue Stivers recalls Jones as 'an outstanding agent'

Jones was "an outstanding agent," said retired Adair County Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Sue Stivers.

"He was one of the most dedicated agents I have ever known," Stivers said. "Not only did he work with adults, but he always enjoyed working with the 4-H club members and other youth. Walter loved young people and they in return respected him highly.

"He had a passion for education and always wanted to see youth follow the 4-H motto, 'To Make the Best Better.' This was exemplified in his estate by leaving money to help students get a good education at Lindsey Wilson."
