Letter: Thinks even a moist law would be an improvement

A Vote for a Moist/Wet vote. Signed. What do you think? Send comments to ColumbiaMagazine.com, Looking Ahead 2009

Dear Ed,

As you know I have lived here 16+ years. In the years I have lived in this dry county I have made many trips to Bowling Green and dined in restaurants that serve liquor. I have never done so without seeing at least several people from Adair dining and drinking alcohol in these restaurants.

Some of them are the same people that preach about a dry county. Also, I have been to many parties in private homes where beer, wine and hard liquor were served. I think the whole thing is pretty hypocritical.

There is a drinking age, and children should be taught to make an informed decision and choice about anything that could be used in a manner that could hurt them. It is a parental responsibility and makes more sense to me than kids going to the bootlegger and doing binge drinking in the woods, or having an accident on the way back from Lebanon.

A factor to consider is that with the availability of alcohol we also have the use of the taxes in our county which could only benefit our schools and government. Also, many companies will not locate to a county that is dry because there are not any decent dinner restaurants in which to entertain clients.

I have worked for several Japanese companies in Illinois, and know that would be a factor to be considered in placing a company facility.

With even a moist law we might get a steak house in the county, and it would give our county the business that Taylor, Barren etc. are now taking away.s/Mary Keltner
